week 1

A dance film in the sense of manipulated movement explored and expressed. Another solo-of-sorts, the close up and cut up of my face pulled and pushed by an unseen manipulator.

With A Little Help From My Friends

A short stop motion film, made for part of my Honours thesis in Dance Studies at the University of Cape Town, in 2012. Paying a sort of homage to two choreographers who greatly influenced how I think about dance, the inserted images act as a brief and blurred visual citation to the kind of choreographic works that made me interested in choreography. The film also attempts to emphasize the disjointed and disconnected way in which the world allows us to find our influences and suggests questions regarding where we fit into what we make and what makes us. (It is not without a bemused and bewildered awareness that I acknowledge the fact that the two choreographers who have influenced me the most are not South African, or even African, but European and I still wonder if this fact is anyway interesting and/or important to the art I make).

Light Dances to the Sad Eyed Lady

A film documenting ‘found movement’ that can appear anywhere and present the sort of motion one could possibly finding beautiful or moving. Not unlike Duchamp and many others with their art made from ‘found objects’, found movement I find somewhat magical and transient, an unambitious and perfectly existing choreography. Thus, I feel it is worth documenting when possible. Here is refracted light, dancing to Bob Dylan’s classic song, “Say Eyed Lady of the Lowlands” from his 1966 record ‘Blonde on Blonde’.

After my second sprain, after my first fracture, I decided to create a slow and painful ode to ankles. The doctor kindly gave me a very informative sheet of information regarding sprains and what to do with them. I edited the paper instead of the film, and here it is.

Infancy and Infinity

One of the first short films I made in America, during an exchange program. It began as absent-mindedly filming a small cousin’s play thing while I played with my new toy (HandiCam Birthday Gift) and ended up as a short little film largely summing up many of my feelings towards America.
